MARKHAM, Ont. – The Western Mustangs men's team and the defending champion Toronto Varsity Blues women's team have taken the lead as the first day of competition came to a close at the 2010 OUA golf championships at Angus Glen Golf Club.
Western's men sit atop a tight race in the standings, leading with a combined team score of 292. The Queen's Gaels (293) sit one stroke behind in second, with the Waterloo Warriors right on their heels at 294.
Waterloo's Garrett Rank (Elmira/) of Elmira, Ont., shot four under par (68) and leads the individual race after day one, while Sean Lackey (Kingston, Ont.) of Queen's is two under par (70) and in sole possession of second place. Five other golfers sit two shots back at 72 in a tie for third.
In women's action, the Varsity Blues (241) hold a four stroke lead over the second-place Warriors (245). The Gaels currently sit in third with a team score of 250 after the first day of action.
2009 OUA individual bronze medalist and Toronto native Laura Upenieks of the Varsity Blues leads the way, shooting a solid round of 75. Windsor's Ali Stinson of Prince George, B.C., is one stroke back with 76, while U of T's first-year standout Julia Pilliar (Toronto) is two back of the lead, finishing the day at 77.
