The Warriors baseball team played in the OUA Championship game today against the #1 seeded Brock Badgers. A tough 3
rd inning where the Warriors allowed 7 runs was the difference as Brock defeated the Warriors 8-0 to be named OUA Champions.
In a double-elimination draw where teams had to lose two games to be eliminated from championship contention, Waterloo fell to the Brock powerhouse. Warriors made it to the finals after having defeated McMaster 14-2, beating Laurier 6-3, falling to Brock 6-1, and then defeating Laurier in a rematch 3-0. Because Brock had not lost this weekend, Waterloo would have had to defeat them twice in order to claim the championship.
With head coach
Tim Pegg and OUA first-team all-star
Michael Clouthier (Guelph) out of today's game after being ejected in last night's game vs. the Laurier Golden Hawks, the pressure seemed to get the better of the Warriors.
The Badgers opened the scoring in the 1
st inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Things went south quickly in the 3
rd inning for the Warriors as they went 3-up, 3-down before Brock Badgers tacked in 7 runs.
Brandon Semus (Windsor) had a difficult day on the mound before
Jay Flannigan (Cornwall) came in as relief in the 4
th inning.
The Warriors best chance to get back in the game came in the 6
th inning when they had a bases loaded, 0 out situation before a 5-2-3 double play and a flyout shortly after saw the Badgers escape the inning unscathed. That was the best opportunity the black and gold had to get back in the game but it was not meant to be.
Brock's pitching was strong throughout the remainder of the game and their defence was sound. Waterloo never mustered much in way of offence en route to the 8-0 loss. This was Brock's 4
th OUA Baseball Championship in their history.
The Warriors had a fantastic year, reaching the playoffs for the first time in its many years and making it to the Championship game. With a relatively young roster, the Warriors posted a winning record during the regular season and eliminated last year's OUA champions (Laurier) single-handedly with two victories (6-3, 3-0).
Worth noting is that
Michael Clouthier (Guelph) was named third base first-team all-star and short stop
Nolan Pettipiece (Burlington) and left fielder
Kyle Thalheimer (Richmond Hill) were named second-team all-stars. Furthermore, head coach
Tim Pegg was only one vote away from being named OUA Baseball Coach-of-the-Year.
